Albedometers

Albedo is the fraction of sunlight that is diffusely reflected by a body and is measured on a scale from 0 (corresponding to a black body that absorbs all incident radiation) to 1 (corresponding to a body that reflects all incident radiation).

An Albedometer is a device that measures the reflectivity of a surface. The instrument emits a beam of light towards a surface at a specific angle (usually 45 degrees). The light that is reflected back is then measured by a sensor that calculates the albedo of the surface based on the ratio of reflected to incident light.

Albedometers can be used to measure the albedo of a wide range of surfaces, including soil, vegetation, water bodies, and even the Earth’s atmosphere. They are particularly useful for studying the reflectivity of different surfaces in the context of climate science, where it becomes very important to understand how much solar radiation is absorbed or reflected by different surfaces.
