Water level is one of the most commonly measured parameters, as accurate level data are essential for a variety of applications. Few of the important reasons for monitoring water levels are climate change, pollution monitoring, and industrial water usage apart from many others.
In general water level is perceived as one of the most straightforward parameters and it is defined as the level of water in a water body such as groundwater, lakes, rivers, streams and more or in a container, tank, reservoir etc. But there are very different water level applications and technologies used to measure it as well as a variety of terms to describe water levels such as:
- Water level: The height or elevation of water above or below a user-specified point.
- Depth: In case of measuring in a groundwater well, this is the distance from the land surface to water in the well. But, if this refers to surface water, then it is the distance from the water’s surface to a specific point, typically the bottom of the water body or the location of a sensor.
- Gage height: Used to describe the water level of a river or stream.
- Tide Gage: Describes a water level sensor used to monitor changes in sea level.
- Elevation: Used when describing the height of water above sea level.
Water level sensors have come a long way from traditional floats to highly advanced technologies. In the past, simple float switches were used to detect the water level, where the float would rise or fall depending on the water level. However, these devices were limited in accuracy and reliability.
With advancements in technology, modern water level sensors have become more sophisticated, offering precise measurements and advanced features. Capacitive, ultrasonic, pressure-based, and optical sensors are some examples of advanced technologies used in water level sensing today. These sensors provide real-time data, high accuracy, and enhanced durability.
